 Public Sector Work History Summary

Dr Connor’s public-sector working history spans 44 years, her most relevant employment prior to taking up full-time private practice in 2015 being as Associate Professor (Psychology) at the University of Canberra, 2010-2014.  In this position, Dr Connor occupied the role of Director of the Psychology clinic there. Dr Connor was responsible for training and supervising the clinical work of students in the Masters in Clinical Psychology and Ph.D programs at the University. Dr Connor has an ongoing interest in her work with students.

Prior to her appointment as Associate Professor, Dr Connor was employed (2006-beginning of 2010) in the position of Director of the Social Work and Psychology Department at Calvary Healthcare ACT, an acute healthcare setting in Canberra.

Other positions held previously include the following:

    • Implementation Manager, Intensive Treatment and Support Program, Disability ACT (temporary 6-month position);
    • Acting Manager (SOG B) Client Services [Adoption Unit], Office of Children, Youth and Family Services (OCYFS);
    • Team Leader, Family Group Conferencing Unit, OCYFS;
    • Senior Psychologist in the Assessment Unit of Family Services (now Child Protection Services, Office of Children, Youth and Family Support), undertaking voluntary and court ordered assessments of adults, children and families;
    • Senior Practitioner with Family Services, providing a consultative service to other staff members regarding complex cases; psychologist;
    • counsellor/mediator with the Family Court Mediation Service; and
    • psychologist, Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS).

Dr Connor has also provided supervision to fully registered, provisional psychologists and Masters students over several years.

The Practice 

Dr Connor has been in full-time private practice in Belconnen ACT since 2015 although was in private practice (part-time) for 15 years prior to that, alongside public sector work. Dr Connor’s focus in her practice is two-fold:

  1. the undertaking of complex assessments of children, adolescents and families for therapeutic intervention, and also for court-related purposes;
  2. the treatment of individuals with a range of mental health presentations, and in particular, those who have suffered long-term and multiple trauma experiences as children and/or adults.

Dr Connor also has a strong interest in the field of neuroscoience, having recently completed further post-graduate stuides in this field at Sydney University (Brain and Mind Research Institute) and sees that the knowledge gained in this additional study is essential to providing accurate diagnoses and appropriate interventions.

More specifically, the work undertaken for her practice comprises a range of services:

    • psychological assessment/diagnostic consideration (some of this for court-related purposes);
    • educational and cognitive assessments;
    • developmental and behavioural assessments of children;
    • Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) assessments;
    • family and individual assessments for the Children’s Court, the Family Court and Federal Court Circuit (Dr Connor is registered as an assessor and expert witness with these courts); and
    • individual therapy services for individuals and families.

Qualifications 

Dr Connor holds a Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science (Psychology), Masters in Brain and Mind Science (Neuroscience), Masters in Education (Curriculum and Learning), Masters in Education (Counselling),  and a Doctor of Health Science (Psychology). The research for this award focused on “The Treatment of Complex Post Traumatic Stress Disorder”, and the study involved developing, implementing and evaluating a treatment program for adults who had suffered long-term and multiple trauma experiences during their childhood or adult years. The research for the award was highly acclaimed by international experts in the field of trauma.
